Sweden has released classified documents related to the Soviet submarine S-363 incident, which ran aground near the Karlskrona naval base in 1981 while carrying torpedoes equipped with nuclear warheads.

The information was analyzed by Michael Fredholm, a former member of Sweden’s National Defence Radio Agency, who argues that the interpretation adopted at the time may have exaggerated the threat posed by the Soviet vessel.

According to the released records, the Swedish government reacted quickly to the incident by mobilizing military forces, interrogating the crew, and accusing the Soviet Union of violating its territorial waters.

At the time, Prime Minister Torbjörn Fälldin supported a hardline stance toward possible violations of the country’s neutrality, which contributed to the diplomatic escalation following the grounding.

However, the new analysis indicates that the incident was mainly caused by navigation failures and operational mistakes aboard the submarine. Days before the grounding, the vessel suffered damage to its navigation equipment after colliding with fishing nets while traveling submerged. In addition, the navigator responsible reportedly misused the guidance systems, causing the submarine to drift dozens of miles off its original course.

The S-363 remained grounded for about ten days under surveillance by Swedish forces before being towed out of the country’s territorial waters in November 1981.

After the investigation conducted by Soviet authorities, the submarine commander and the brigade chief responsible for the vessel were removed from their positions. Fredholm emphasized that the episode serves as a warning about the importance of analyzing international crises carefully in order to avoid misinterpretations and rushed decisions.
